TECHNOVATION SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY

Social Media Policy for students

Technovation Staff manages the main Technovation and Technovation Girls social media profiles. Volunteers associated with Chapters and Clubs manage regional social media profiles and may have additional policies or guidance for students they work with.

The policies on this page are intended to help keep students, volunteers, and Technovation staff safe online.

Students Under the Age of 13

Most social media platforms prohibit users under the age of 13 from creating or maintaining accounts on their platforms.

We expect Technovation participants to follow the rules and policies of any online company or entity they are interacting with, including social media companies.

Students Age 13 and Over

  • You must be at least 13 years old to create an account on Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok, Twitter or Linkedin.
  • We recommend setting your social media accounts to private, so only people you trust can see your posts.
  • Remember that things you post online are visible to many people, not just your friends. Consider what you share publicly carefully before you post.
  • Once something is shared online, it never really goes away. Even if you delete a post, someone may have a screenshot or other record of that post. Everything you share becomes part of your online image, and may affect you later in life. Think carefully before you post online.
  • If you would like to share your Technovation work with others, we recommend creating a profile for your team or product rather than posting from your individual account(s).
  • If a mentor, coach, volunteer, or other adult in the program friend requests, follows, or direct messages you on social media, or communicates with you directly in some other way (phone call, text message), you are not obligated to accept their request or reply back. Feel free to inform your parent/guardian or our staff if you are uncomfortable or need help with what to do next.

Social media policy for volunteers, mentors, and coaches

  • We discourage volunteers (including Chapter Ambassadors, Club Ambassadors, Mentors, and Coaches) from connecting with individual program participants on social media, including WhatsApp.
    • If you need to communicate with a participant, we encourage mentors and coaches to send our template to parents to receive their permission to contact their children on agreed-upon communication channel(s).
    • In general, we strongly encourage mentors and coaches to always include parents or guardians in communications with participants.
  • Mentors are not allowed to use or download student photos from their social media accounts or take any other information from there.
  • If another volunteer friend requests, follows, or direct messages you on social media, or communicates with you directly in some other way (phone call, text message), you are not obligated to accept their request or reply back. Feel free to inform our staff if you are uncomfortable or need help with what to do next.
  • If Technovation encounters inappropriate content on your social media (violence, substance abuse, nudity, profanity), it holds the right to terminate your role with the program.

Thank you for helping us make Technovation safe and fun for everyone.
