2023 Impact Report

2023 was big.

A 15-year strategic plan to reach 25 million girls and women.

+ A new alliance to close the gender gap in tech.

+ Technovation Girls’ biggest season ever!

In 2023 we set a moonshot goal to empower 25 million girls and young women, unveiled the Strategic Plan that will guide us to that goal, and launched The AI Forward Alliance, a game-changing collaboration to close the gender gap in tech. In the middle of all that we celebrated the biggest season of Technovation Girls in ever!

This momentum is fueled by our global network of passionate volunteers, supporters, and funders. Thank you for your commitment to empowering girls everywhere! Here’s a look back at what we accomplished together in 2023.

All in on AI Education

The power and potential of artificial intelligence is staggering–which is why we need to make sure more people, including girls, are prepared to navigate and shape the technology of the future.

Technovation began introducing AI fundamentals to young people seven years ago, and built on our AI offerings year after year. As a result, participants have created more than a thousand AI prototypes.

Why we embrace ChatGPT and AI in education

In 2023, we expanded our AI resources by adding additional guidance on leveraging generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to refine project development.

Through the Technovation Girls curriculum, students learn how to build their own datasets and AI models to tackle problems in their own local communities. Girls are also building AI features into their project in innovative and inspiring ways.

In Turkey, girls are...

using AI to fight air pollution

In early 2023 Umay, Beyza, Nazlı, Yağmur, and İrem created Global Pollution System (GPS), a device to detect and educate about air pollution. After a devastating earthquake struck their city, they swiftly adapted GPS to map asbestos from collapsed buildings, using their innovation to protect their community by identifying hazardous zones.

In Canada, girls are...

using AI for heart health

Prerana and Diana, both passionate about AI in healthcare, joined forces to create Project Heart Scope, an AI diagnostic tool for cardiovascular diseases. While developing their models, they discovered gaps in global medical access, especially in under-resourced areas, and committed to making health technology accessible to all.

The Biggest Technovation Girls Season Ever

2023 By the Numbers

21,508 students registered in 2023—that’s enough girls to fill Madison Square Garden (and then some).

Every student who participates in the program demonstrates their courage and innovation. We congratulate every participant for being brave enough to learn something new.

We received 2,161 completed submissions—that’s 2,161 ways girls are changing the world right now. Girls submitted projects from 62 countries.

Behind those 2,161 submissions are: 7,500 girls, 3,600 mentors, 131 chapter ambassadors, 70 club ambassadors, 120 student ambassadors, 1,500 judges, and hundreds of other volunteers

Expanded Curriculum

In 2023, we were proud to offer the Technovation Girls curriculum in eight translations.

We were also delighted to work with climate experts and Technovation alumnae to develop 3 additional units of curriculum focused on climate-related issues. These units are supplements to the main curriculum and provide teams interested in tackling climate-related issues with concrete examples, additional resources, and brainstorming exercises to help them think beyond basic recycling apps.

Technovation's 2023 Highlights

In 2023, we gathered in person again

For the first time since 2019, we were able to prioritize in-person events globally and regionally. Girls, mentors, ambassadors, and volunteers were able to gather to start the season, learn together, tour companies, and host regional pitch and celebration events.

Chapters hosted 34 events in 13 countries to celebrate the end of the season and bring students and volunteers together. And finally, in October, Technovation was able to once again host a global World Summit event.

World Summit

For the first time since 2019, Technovation hosted  World Summit in person in the San Francisco Bay Area. Finalist teams flew in from around the world to pitch their projects to industry experts.

After a week of tours, field trips, and friendship, the Technovation community celebrated the end of an amazing season on October 5th, 2023, generously hosted by Synopsys.

Community Impact

Skills Developed

Technovation Girls transforms participants into confident coders, AI innovators, and tech-savvy changemakers. Participants have the opportunity to create real-world solutions, giving them an entrepreneurial edge, and sharpening their business, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Impact isn’t just about skills—it’s about the ways girls transform when empowered by a supportive network.

They discover their potential, find their voices, and embrace new ideas, experiences, and tools that open doors to a brighter future.

Volunteers: The Heart of Technovation

55,000 volunteers shared 133,000 hours with us

In 2023, we celebrated our incredible volunteers with new initiatives and expanded impact.

Connecting Globally
Our Chapter Ambassadors embarked on thrilling exchanges, traveling to learn from each other and strengthen our global community.

Mentor Curriculum
We launched a new mentor curriculum, aligning with the student curriculum and providing valuable guidance and context.

Chapter Ambassador Stella from Nigeria traveled to meet Chapter Ambassador Sarah from Germany

Students work on their Technovation Girls projects in North Dakota. We worked with 9 Moonshot Ambassadors in SC, ND, OH, NV, VA, TX, and PA

Shooting for the Moon
Partnering with STEM Next, we recruited a passionate group of US-based Moonshot Ambassadors, launching new clubs and chapters to ignite the Million Girls Moonshot and reach more girls in the US.

Coaching for Success
We piloted a coaching program for teams without mentors, offering sessions on essential skills. These sessions expanded access to topic experts, and were valued by both students and volunteers.

A growing global network of powerful young women

As of now, over 55,000 Technovation Girls alumnae are above the age of 18. They grew up! And they are incredible!

In 2023 alone, Technovation alumnae spoke at the UN High Political Forum and presented at COP 28, and even won the International Children’s Peace Prize. And that’s not even mentioning the thousands of young women using the skills they developed through Technovation Girls to continue to transform their communities, families, and the workforce.

In addition to our online alumnae community (which numbers in the tens of thousands), we were proud to support alumnae in specific volunteer roles, including as student ambassadorsalumnae mentors, and alumnae leadership board members.

Our Commitment to Investing in Underserved Communities Around the World

Technovation provides essential access to coding and entrepreneurship curriculum at no cost, ensuring that every girl, regardless of her financial situation, has the opportunity to learn, innovate, and lead in our tech-driven world.

Global definitions of who is considered “underserved” vary significantly, so Technovation tracks participation metrics across a variety of realms.

  • We are continuing to reach girls who are often left behind in the digital divide with 61% of our participants hailing from low or middle-income countries and 52% attending schools where coding is not taught.
  • In North America, 71% of girls identify as belonging to racial or ethnic groups other than Caucasian.
  • Globally, on average, chapter ambassadors reported that at least half of the students they served were low-income based on local standards.

In addition to offering our program at no cost, Technovation dedicated over $600,000 this past year in grants to directly support our local community partners who are relentlessly working to uplift girls in underinvested communities globally. By channeling resources into the hands of those working directly with girls, we are catalyzing change in these communities. Our partners’ endeavors, supported by these funds, have made it possible to expand our reach and deepen our impact, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.

2023 Technovation Supporters and Partners

This work would not be possible without our partners and supporters. Thank you to everyone who generously supported Technovation in 2023.
